5 participants of the Kaiserbäderpleinairs 2016 on the German east coast will paint in May 2017 in Lisbon by the sea and in the Casa-Atelier Vieira da Silva. From May 25 to June 11, their work will be exhibited at the Vieira da Silva studio.

The project was created in 2005 from an idea by the Berlin painter Sigurd Wendland and developed into an audience favorite in Germany over the years. 7 painters paint 7 days without thematic specifications but pleinair (outdoor). The historic Museum Villa Irmgard is transformed into a painting commune where the artists work, live and cook together. At this time, the museum is open to every visitor to observe and question the artists during their work. In all these years, this was a week of intensive painting, in which up to 50 paintings were created, which were then shown in an exhibition of wet, fresh paintings in the Museum Villa Irmgard Heringsdorf. Every year, a jury selects 7 artists from the applications. Criterion is the picturesque quality, professionalism and the prerequisite that the artists can paint outside between the bathers. The participant list of the past years and the respective catalogs with paintings as well as situation photos of the “Kunstkommune” can be found at:

In 2017, the Kaiserbäderpleinair “7 MALEN AM MEER” takes place on the island of Usedom on the German east coast in Heringsdorf for the thirteenth time.

Artist is often a withdrawn individual, but here he is forced to a permanent present and communication, to an exceptional situation, which is reflected in the work. Rarely, the painters work so intensively, create so many works in such a short time as under Pleinairkommuneconditions. Some discuss late at night, others test the water temperature in swimming early in the morning, but painting together, eating and drinking, discussing and exhibiting are collective experiences for the artists and the audience.

Organized and sponsored by Eigenbetrieb Kaiserbäder Insel Usedom.
